ULTRASOUND
GUIDED INTERVENTIONALS
An image guided biopsy is a highly effective diagnostic tool. It can be quite helpful to undertake an image guided biopsy of the area because it is not always easy to diagnose a lump based on the information in an image. This may be a clinical decision by your doctor, or may be advised by the radiologist at the time of reporting your preliminary scan
At your visit, remember to bring your referral (a letter from your doctor) as well as your Medicare and/or Pension Health Care cards. It is vital to bring any previous films, Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) results, or biopsy results that pertain to the region being investigated.
Most biopsy techniques don't require any prior preparation. However, we might ask you to stop taking blood-thinning medicine before the biopsy. We might also require a copy of the most recent blood test results. You will be requested to refrain from using any blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, after the biopsy.
For lesions visible under ultrasound, the ultrasound machine is used to locate the lesion. The radiologist will then administer some local anaesthetic to numb the area, before using the ultrasound machine to guide a needle to the exact location of the lesion before taking samples.
In order to give the pathologist access to as many cells as possible, the sampling is typically performed three to four times. The treatment is typically fairly well tolerated thanks to local anaesthesia and the skill of our expert radiologist.
After your examination, the images from your study will be available on the Medscan Z-tech app. A report written by our radiologists, along with the images will be sent directly to your referring doctor. Medscan will store digital copies of all studies on our secure database for comparison with any future examinations. All images are available online with the Medscan Z-link app
